Off Lead Walking Policy

V1 - Issued June 2026

The safety and welfare of every dog in my care is my highest priority. Dogs will be exercised on or off lead according to their individual needs, abilities, owner permissions, and the circumstances present at the time of the walk.

Dogs will be kept on a lead at all times when near roads, car parks, livestock, horses, waterways, public events, or any other environment where there is an increased risk to the dog, members of the public, other animals, or property.

Dogs will also be placed on a lead when approaching unknown dogs unless it is safe and appropriate to do otherwise. This is to ensure respectful interactions and to maintain control in situations where the temperament, behaviour, or training of the other dog is unknown.

Off-lead exercise will only be permitted where:-

  • Written owner consent has been provided.

  • The dog's recall is considered reliable.

  • The environment is suitable and safe.

I am satisfied that the dog can be exercised off lead without posing an unreasonable risk to itself, other animals, people, or property.

Even where owner consent for off-lead exercise has been given, I reserve the right to keep any dog on a lead or long line at my sole discretion if I believe conditions, behaviour, health, welfare, or safety considerations make off-lead exercise unsuitable on that particular occasion.

Dogs attending secure enclosed fields may be exercised off lead within the secure area, subject to owner consent and my assessment of the dog's suitability.

Owners are responsible for informing Rain & Winds Pet Care of any changes to their dog's health, behaviour, training, recall ability, or circumstances that may affect the safe management of their dog during walks.
